Modernization Starts in the Boardroom: Governance that Drives Strategic Change

Community colleges are reimagining how they serve students and regions—but true transformation requires boards that are aligned, visionary, and bold. This roundtable examines the role of trustees in championing modernization—from approving major technology shifts to reshaping institutional priorities. How can boards provide oversight and leadership? What governance habits and questions accelerate (or stall) transformation? Come ready to share insights, challenges, and emerging practices from your boardroom.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What role should trustees play in shaping or supporting modernization efforts like system upgrades, service redesign, or campus transformation?
  2. Where do you see barriers to change in your governance structure or culture—and how is your board addressing them?
  3. How do you ensure your board’s oversight reinforces, rather than slows down, innovation and modernization?

Evolving Attitudes On Workplace Safety.
Businesses, organizations and institutions are rethinking how they approach workplace safety. More emphasis is being placed on changing workplace culture, the importance of mental health and the roles and responsibilities of all employees in creating healthy and safe workplace cultures.  The key to the success of these initiatives is in evolving not only the organizational approach to risk management, but also the individual attitudes of policy makers, management and employees whose buy-in is critical to the success of these efforts.

Developing a strong safety culture starts at the top. We’ll drill down to the significant aspects of safety development and exploration on the community college stage, provide administrators with the knowledge and tools to foster a proactive, institution-wide commitment to safety, fulfilling your role as ambassadors for employee and student well-being.  Designed to address both physical and psychological safety, the program emphasizes leadership's role in modeling and reinforcing safe behaviors, effective communication, and risk awareness. Through case studies and injury statistics, participants will learn to address current campus safety climates, engage stakeholders and implement sustainable safety initiatives.

A solid safety culture begins with leadership initiatives and works best when employees have a stake in their safety.  Like a winning culture in sports, we’ll get involved in discussions on what makes for a winning safety culture at your college.

Topics will include institutional approaches to social impact, governance evolution, environmental initiatives and sustainability, serving students—traditional and non-traditional, and other provocative issues of the day.
